Are you ready to unlock the secret to skyrocketing productivity? I have a game-changing technique to share with you: gamifying your tasks. It’s a simple yet powerful approach that can transform the way you work. Who doesn’t love playing games, right?
Here’s how it works:
- Compete with Yourself: Think of productivity as a game where you challenge yourself to achieve specific targets. For instance, let’s say you struggle with punctuality. To gamify showing up on time, follow these steps:
a. Aim to arrive on time or even a few minutes early, just once. That’s your first win (#1).
b. Repeat the feat and show up on time or early again. That’s your second win (#2).
c. Keep the streak going and award yourself a point for every instance of being punctual.
d. As your streak grows, you’ll be less inclined to start over at 1. Remember, the only competition is against yourself.

2. Embrace Technology: To track your progress effectively, consider using apps like Streaks (iOS and Mac) or Way of Life (available on iOS and Android). These apps allow you to create tasks or journal entries to record your achievements and maintain a streak. However, you can also use traditional methods like a whiteboard, chalkboard, notebook, or any system that suits you.
3. Endless Possibilities: Gamification can be applied to various areas of your life. Here are 25 ideas to get you started:
- Reading
- Exercising
- Updating your CRM
- Meditating
- Making a set number of sales calls daily
- Learning a new language
- Practicing oral hygiene
- Completing homework or assignments
- Walking your dog (they’ll appreciate it!)
- Capturing a photo
- Staying hydrated by drinking enough water
- Avoiding soda
- Limiting alcohol consumption
- Engaging in push-up exercises
- Reducing coffee intake
- Avoiding fast food
- Resisting late-night snacking
- Cutting down on sweets
- Setting aside time for prayer or meditation
- Maintaining good posture
- Striving for inbox zero
- Minimizing television time
- Devoting time to study
- Quitting smoking
- Spending quality time with your kids

4. Developing New Habits: The goal of gamification is to create positive habits. By consistently gamifying certain activities, you’ll increase the likelihood of forming lasting habits that contribute to your success.
To give you an idea of how powerful gamification can be, here are a few examples of what I gamify:
- Waking up at 5 AM
- Running 1 mile a day (streak start: August 29, 2017)
- Closing the Activity Rings on my Apple Watch
- Learning Spanish on Duolingo
- Drinking water every day
Remember, it’s okay if you don’t maintain every streak consistently. Life happens, and there might be occasional setbacks. What matters is the overall progress and the positive impact on your habits.
