For a long time, I viewed self-care as something that was selfish or unnecessary.
I thought it should be the last item on my to-do list, if it made the list at all.
However, my views changed drastically because of an eye-opening experience.
The Reality Check
The moment of truth came in the fall of 2021 when my mom fell ill. Despite living far away and working a full-time job, I wanted to be there for her as much as I could. COVID-19 restrictions made it impossible to physically be by her side, but the emotional toll of the situation was overwhelming. I realized that by neglecting to fill my own “cup,” I was less effective at being there for her or for anyone else.
The Importance of Self-Care
Self-care is not just about face masks and spa days; it extends to everyday activities that improve your well-being.
Basic personal grooming, eating nutritious foods, and engaging in regular exercise are foundational aspects of self-care.
Additionally, enriching your life through hobbies and learning also contributes to your overall health.
People with diverse interests often find themselves more engaging and have more to offer in conversations and relationships.
The bottom line is that self-care empowers you to be a better version of yourself, which in turn allows you to give more to others.
The Journey to Wellness
After recognizing my own need for self-care, I took steps to improve my lifestyle.
